Looking to add a bit of late-summer beauty to your garden? Plant these stunning summer flowers, many of which can be direct-seeded!

Asters

Asters are great for later plantings as they bloom in about 85 days and can be direct sown. They thrive in soil temperatures around 70°F and are beautiful when cut!

Coreopsis

Coreopsis blooms in just 83 days and can be used to make natural dyes. It germinates best in soil temperatures between 55°-70°F. Coreopsis self-sows slowly, helping with next year’s planting.

Cosmos

Cosmos come in a large variety of colors and are very easy to grow in soil that’s around 70°F. Depending on the variety, you’ll see blooms in about 45-65 days.

Hyacinth Bean

Despite having “bean” in the name, hyacinth is actually poisonous to humans. However, it can climb up to 20 feet depending on the growing conditions. These gorgeous pink and purple flowers should be sown a month after your last frost.

Violas

Also known as “Johnny Jump Ups”, these easy-to-grow flowers are adorable and edible. When soil temperatures are around 70°F, they can be direct sown.

Marigolds

Depending on the variety, Marigolds can bloom in as little as 55 days! Many gardeners start them indoors in early spring so that they can be direct sown when the soil warms up later in the season.

Morning Glories

Morning Glories can be direct sown and will bloom in about 65 days. When you’re planting them, be sure to soak the seeds for two days and change the soaking water every 12 hours.

Nasturtiums

These are another edible flower, and make a fantastic addition to your summer garden. Plus, they can be direct sown.

Phlox

Phlox will bloom well into the fall, and the flowers can survive temperatures as low as 20°F. They mature in 80 and can be direct-seeded.

Black-Eyed Susans

Also known as Rudbeckia, Black-Eyed Susans are fantastic for those who want pretty blooms but don’t have a lot of time to commit to ongoing maintenance.

Tithonia

Tithonia, aka Mexican Sunflower, is very heat-resistant and can be direct-seeded in soil temperatures up to 86°F, and will grow up to five feet tall, attracting lots of beautiful butterflies to your garden.
