Check & Change Your Own Oil

Take initiative in your car maintenance this year! Learn how to check and change your own oil! Creating this habit will save you lots of money and time. If you aren’t sure how often to do it, check your car’s owner’s manual. Here are some simple step-by-step instructions for checking your oil. If you still don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself, bring your car to a mechanic. This service is reasonable and effective.

What You Do

  1. Make sure your car engine has been turned off for at least 5 minutes before you begin.
  2. Make sure your car is in the parked position on a level surface.
  3. Pop the hood of your car and look underneath for the oil dipstick. It typically says “oil” or shows a small oil icon.
  4. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with your paper towel or old rag.
  5. Return the dipstick all the way back in.
  6. Pull the dipstick back out and inspect it. You do not turn it upside down.
  7. You will see two markers (lines or holes) near the bottom of the dipstick. If the oily part ends below the bottom marker, you will need to add more oil. Never add more than a quart of oil at a time before you recheck the oil level. Too much motor oil is bad for the vehicle. If the oil level is between the two markers, you are good to go!
