Chill Out: Stay Cool This Summer

It’s only getting warmer here in New Jersey, and the hot sun can feel like too much to handle on sweltering summer days. It’s important to stay safe and cool this season, so consider these steps to beat the heat.

Stay Hydrated

When the weather is hot and you find yourself sweating much more, you’ll need to replenish the water your body loses as you perspire. It’s essential to stay hydrated throughout the day to regain the water and vitamins your body needs to handle the heat, so keep a bottle or canteen of cold water handy wherever you go. Be sure to refill your pet’s water bowl as needed, too. If you needed more incentive to sip something cool, remember that a cold drink can also feel refreshing in the middle of a hot day.

Cool Your Home

Running the air conditioner while you’re home will ultimately be more effective than relying on an electric fan when the temperatures outside soar. Find a temperature that works for you, but be careful not to overwork the air conditioner. Forcing it to cool to a very low temperature in the extreme heat might cause it to malfunction when you need it most, so don’t crank the A/C too low. While you’re out for the day, it might be tempted to turn the air conditioner off to save on the power bill, but it will only have to work harder to cool your home once you return, so set it to a reasonable temperature so that it doesn’t have to make up for the intense heat all at once.

Find the A/C

When you’re away from home, or if you’re air conditioning has broken, you’ll still need to find some relief during the day. Try dipping into a public place like a mall or library if you feel like you’re getting too hot, as these places should all be properly air conditioned. Taking breaks from the heat for an hour or so in the cold air should help your body keep cooler.

Don’t Overexert

Engaging in strenuous activity in extreme heat can be dangerous, so aim to limit outdoor activity as much as you can during the heat of the day. If possible, leave tasks like mowing the lawn or your afternoon walk to the cool of the day – in the early morning or later in the evening. Even at those hours, remember that it’s still very important to stay hydrated.
