Build Your Own Raised Garden Bed This Season

Raised bed with organic vegetable plants in the garden, gardening for healthy food

If you’re interested in starting your own garden this summer, you’re going to want to consider using Oldcastle planter wall blocks for your raised garden beds. You’ll save time, money, and hassle by using this tutorial!

Plot and Plan

The first step to creating your own backyard garden is to plot out the location and shape of your beds. In general, vegetables need about eight hours of full sunlight a day, so be sure you put the beds in the sunniest spot of your yard without any shade. Building raised beds with the Oldcastle blocks makes it super easy to make any polygon shape with your beds, so don’t be afraid to build outside of the box – literally.

Gather Your Materials

Everything you need to build your raised beds can be purchased at your nearest hardware store. Using the Oldcastle blocks cuts a lot of the cost of all-wood or pre-made raised beds, which is always helpful! You’ll need Oldcastle planter wall blocks, stock lumber, soil, nutrients, rebar stakes, and plants. How much you need of each material will depend on how tall and wide your beds are. Many folks use 2 x 6 boards stacked two high for a total of 12 inches of soil depth, but you could go up to 18 inches high for optimal rooting.

Assemble the Beds

Assembly couldn’t be easier for this project, and you can use this video tutorial for a more in-depth explanation. Essentially, you will dig a half-inch furrow where the baseboards will go for extra stability. Then, place the planter wall blocks at the four corners and slide the boards in, continue adding blocks and boards to your desired height. Finally, slip a rebar stake in each corner to ensure the blocks don’t slip if they are bumped.
